Enhancing Reading with AI & Neurotechnology

Our AI-powered reading app improves fluency and comprehension. Designed for individuals with reading challenges, neurodiverse users, and those with mobility or speech limitations, it leverages AAVAA’s neurotechnology and Intel’s AI PC to track attention and speech in real time—delivering benefits that support users across all ability levels.

A Collaborative Solution

AAVAA
Attention
Tracking

AAVAA’s Smart Reader leverages Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology to track user attention. When the user turns away from reading or spends too much time on one word, AAVAA BCI sensors track user behaviour in real time.

Powered by Intel’s Lunar Lake AI PC, Intel powers core features by leveraging Intel’s CPU, GPU, and Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for seamless on-the-edge AI processing.

In collaboration with Intel’s AI PC technology, we’re empowering individuals with mobility and speech challenges to communicate effortlessly and engage with their computers, much like the tools Intel developed for Stephen Hawking. Together, we’ve created reading-fluency tools that support children and individuals with neurodivergence, unlocking their potential to learn, grow, and thrive.

About the Project

With over 1 billion people worldwide living with some form of disability [1], reading difficulties remain a global challenge affecting millions, especially children. The major contributing factors are attention-related issues, such as distractions or difficulty staying focused, hindering academic performance, emotional well-being, and future opportunities [2].

We conducted an in-depth study to define the end-user profile, showcasing individuals with ADHD, Autism, and Dyslexia face unique reading challenges rooted in cognitive and neurological differences [3], contributing to the staggering statistic of 65% U.S. fourth graders struggling to read at a proficient level [4].

The current reading tools that exist to support children and teachers are not accessible and do not feature personalized features. They typically lack the ability to track attention, fail to provide meaningful feedback and require constant internet connectivity for AI tools.

Supported by Intel’s RISE Technology Initiative (IRTI) and funded by Intel, AAVAA has developed The Smart Reader: A reading tool designed to analyze user attention and reading behavior. Providing personalized feedback and recommendations for improving reading.

Providing valuable insights into your focus and reading behavior.

Choral Reading Mode

In the Choral Reading Mode the app listens to your voice and provides instant visual feedback on reading mistakes such as mispronounced words or omitted words, helping you maintain a steady pace and improve fluency.

Feedback and Suggestions

Powered by Intel AI PC, receive instant feedback and metrics on reading fluency, speed, and accuracy. highlighting areas for improvement based on the user’s reading history.

Practice & History

The app’s practice section develops tailored reading skills based on your performance and history, powered locally by Intel AI PC. Users can tap into targeted reading exercises to help build reading skills progressively.

The Need for Inclusive Tools

Gaps in Accessibility Market

People with mobility, speech, and attention impairments often face significant reading barriers with traditional educational tools due to limited control options and non-inclusive design. AAVAA technology, combined with Intel’s AI processing, offers hands-free educational support for all users, especially neurodiverse individuals like those with ADHD and dyslexia . This solution addresses the needs of 1.3 billion people with disabilities worldwide [1], tapping into an emerging market for AI-powered educational tools that rivals the size of China.

AI Solutions in Education

The combined solution between AAVAA and Intel can create a huge impact in how reading assessments and learning plans are handled. By streamlining data collection and analysis, the Smart Reader app allows teachers to shift their support to each student with more impactful and individualized instructions.

The Smart Reader application contributes to building a more inclusive and equitable learning environment, reflecting the broader societal benefits AI can bring.

Case Study: Test Experience

A teenager in Quebec who tested the Smart Reader struggled with reading and focus. After using the AAVAA Smart Reader, it was found to be highly beneficial for improving attention and reading skills, and plans to continue using the Smart Reader to further enhance reading abilities.

AAVAA was honored with the Intel AI PC Innovation Challenge Award, which celebrates ecosystem partners for developing optimized solutions that leverage Intel AI PCs to create a positive social impact. Receiving financial rewards, including Market Development Fund prizes.
